Your First Impression is Made through Your LinkedIn Profile Your LinkedIn Profile Works for you 24/7- It should reflect whatever image you want to be recognised for.
- Aim to complete 100% of your profile.
How Long Will it Take Before I start to See the Benefits of Creating My LinkedIn Profile? Once your Profile has been created, it will take 1 or 2 months for the 'spiders' used by Search Engines to index your profile with the keywords and phrases you have used. For this reason, its worth putting in the extra effort into your Linkedin Profile, so your Profile Page is optimized right from the start. What's Your Purpose in Creating a LinkedIn Profile? There's now a sense of urgency for people to get their LinkedIn Profile Updated. You will probably google someone's name before going to meet them, and that 's exactly what prospective clients, suppliers and employers are doing before meeting you or making the decision whether to contact you for help. LinkedIn is highly optimized, so your LinkedIn Profile could be the very first page that comes up in the search when people google your name, and your city. Creating a Professional Linkedin Profile is now a standard requirement for any professional who is seeking to build their professional reputation, attract more job opportunities or attract more clients. If you only have basic information on your LinkedIn Profile, You are forfeiting the opportunity to build a strong brand that is consistent with the reputation you have worked hard to create. What is the message you want to convey to people interested in finding out more about you?
Could it be that you're on the fast track to becoming an industry expert, for example?
LinkedIn Profiles can reduce your job search by half the time and half the effort.
LinkedIn is a handy resource that recruiters and employers use to find the perfect candidate for the perfect job.
LinkedIn makes it really easy for people who want to be considered for future job opportunities.
Leverage Your Resume
If you've already updated your resume, you can simply upload the summary paragraph into your Linkedin profile and then select what achievements you want to share with your connections. I would tweak the wording of the achievements so they don't give out confidential information, use percentages to show the difference you have made instead.
How to Optimize Your Profile
The important element here is to ensure you use the key words that the recruiter will use to find someone with your skills, knowledge and experience.
Start Making Connections
People will be more likely to call you if you are connected to them, or to someone they know, so this is why it's important for you to try and connect with as many people in your industry as possible.
Your Own Billboard
Your LinkedIn Profile could stay on the web for the rest of your working career. The effort you put in to your profile will pay dividends as you will be contacted by hiring managers - resulting in more exciting job offers.
Your Linkedin profile makes it easy for people to learn more about you, as the Linkedin system is a risk free, highly efficient way of sourcing great candidates. Always keep your main message clear and easy to interpret, showcase your skills, knowledge and experience as proof that you deliver results and positive outcomes.
WARNING to Job Seekers If you're using LinkedIn to look for a new job, here are some recommendations for you to take action on:
 1. Log into Linkedin and go to your settings tab (click on your name on the top right hand corner, and select 'settings')
2. Go to PRIVACY CONTROLS and click onto each of the following so your connections (or the general public) can't see what groups you've joined (eg Jobs 2.0) or connections you've made (ie wouldn't it become obvious if your connections could all suddenly see you've become acquainted with 5 recruiters over the last month?)
- Turn on/off your activity broadcasts
- Select who can see your activity feed
- Select what others see when you've viewed their profile
- Select who can see your connections
- Change your profile photo & visibility
3. Another important tip - Your connections can still see the list of people that you are both connected to, they are called 'shared connections'. So if your colleague is connected to the same recruiter as you, they will be able to see this connection you've just made. I would try to avoid making any further connections with anyone who is associated with your current workplace or client list. That way, you lower the risk of anyone knowing you're keen to look for opportunities.
It may help to answer these questions before you commence your Linkedin Profile:
1.What Industry do you want to be a Part of? 2.What is Your Job Title likely to be? 3.Where would you like to work? 4.What Size Company would you like to join?
Want to Find Job Opportunities?
You can take a proactive approach and set up your LinkedIn profile to send the message that you are professional in your field, with key strengths and characteristics. As you write about your past achievements, I would have the target audience in mind. Speak directly to them as you write about how your contributions have add value to the organisations you've worked with. Outline your knowledge, skills and experience about how you've assisted the target industry to overcome challenges to help them achieve positive results.
A Special Note to Business Owners If you are building your business, you will want to show your clients that you have a full understanding of their challenges and frustrations. When writing in the 'content' sections of your profile (your summary and experience sections), you will want to be speaking directly to them. Use a conversational tone, use the technical words and industry phrases that they use when talking with you.- Every statement you use in your LinkedIn Profile will be telling them that you have already proven success in helping people (or businesses) like them. If you already have testimonials, I would highly recommend you copying 2 or 3 testimonials from people who represent your ideal client, because this will attract more of your 'ideal client'. Later on, you could ask these people to use the 'recommendation' function to make them more believable.
- What ever your products and services proclaim to do, your LinkedIn Profile could promote the benefits and your Unique Selling Proposition.
- Your profile could even address some of the possible objections people might give to engaging in your services, which will save you valuable time trying to convert the lead into a sale. If you take the effort to do this, Your LinekdIn Profile could reduce the risk and possible anxiety (or obstacles) people have to contacting you, making any enquires richer and easier to convert.
This works for me everyday, it takes about 5 minutes to take a new enquiry and convert it into a sale, because my LinkedIn Profile and website does all the hard work from me
These are just a few tips, see if you can search for new ideas that others are using in other industries to the one you are in, and then consider how you could tweak the idea, to make your Linkedin Profile unique and interesting.
Sneak a peak at how other people in your industry are presenting their skills, knowledge and experience. - Find people who do what you do. If you haven't done so already, please open up another window in your browser and go to www.linkedin.com. Insert the job title or industry you want to work within, and the country or region you are part of.
- Write down the top 7 key words and phrases they are using in their profile. See how some people use short paragraphs and bullet points and consider how easy it is to read when compared to the profiles that use a large block of text.
- Write down the top 7 groups they are members of. If you know how to do this already, I would recommend looking at 3 that are global groups, and join the groups that have the biggest amount of members. Then concentrate mostly on groups that have many members in your country, town or city. If you don't know how to see the groups, we will address this in the bonus videos below.
- Look at the 'applications' some people use - some have automatic updates from their wordpress blogs, some are recommending books, others are giving away their powerpoint slides. Think what you might do in a month or two, once you have your basic profile up and running. There's no need to do this now, but it's good to research what can be done in the future.
- Look at the profile photo they are using. How do you feel when people have not uploaded their photo? What feelings do you get when people give a friendly smile and are looking directly into the camera? Now look at the photos where the subject is looking sternly at the camera, or looking away?
